What makes Laxdaela saga different from other Icelandic sagas is that a woman plays the main role. The themes are love, revenge, jealousy and combats, like in in many other sagas.
In Laxdaela saga almost everybody is described as handsome, nice and intelligent. The persons belong to important families of settlers and their posterity. The main persons derive from Ketill the Flatnose, a Norwegian chieftain who fled from Norway in the days of king Haraldur harfagri (870- 930). Ketill escaped to Scotland, but his children moved to Iceland and settled there.
This saga contains the everlasting struggle between good and evil. It tells about great men and women, slaves and farmers. It also tells about ghosts and supernatural phenomena. In these days people interpreted all their dreams and believed that human life was ruled by fate.
Laxdaela saga is more then an ordinary romance but when you loose yourself in it it will become both extremely exciting and fairly easy to read.
