Reykholt now a days

Many things have changed in Reykholt since Snorri Sturluson lived there in the years 1206- 1241. The main changes are that the population has increased, for example in the last years a kind of a village has been developed there, where about 70 people live. Also the buildings have besome bigger and more imposing. The main buildings are the old church, built in 1886-87, The Regionalschool, built in 1930-31 and now a new gorgeous church is almost completed.

The Regionalschool was in Reykholt since 1931 until the year 1995, when the school was made a branch of Fjoelbrautaskoli Vesturlands (which is a comprehensive school) and is now under its supervision. Because of that the name of the school is now Fjoelbrautaskoli Vesturlands i Reykholti. Among the students who wrote those pages about Snorri is one who started her education at Reykholt.

Snorri Sturluson's museum was founded in Reykholt but in it there are preserved most of the literary works of Snorri Sturluson also books and sources that have been written about him over the years.

In Reykholt there is a pool from Snorri's days. From the pool there used to lie an underground passage to his house and a part of it has been excavated. Both the pool and the passage are being preserved in remembrance of Snorri Sturluson.

The graveyard by the old pool is also very remarkable because in it there is a square named "Sturlungareitur", but is's believed that Snorri and some members of his family are buried there.

Reykholt is one of the most remarkable historical places in Iceland because of the residence of Snorri Sturluson and therefore it is a very coveted tourist attraction. In the summertime the schoolhouse is changed into a hotel, called Eddu-hotel. There the needs of tourists are satisfied, both with food, drinks and accommodation for the night.
