Jon Loftsson (d. 1197) was the chieftain of the county of Ranga and was the most popular chief as well as bein ghe greatest politician in Iceland at his time. He participated in the so-called Stadarmal, in 1179, against the Roman- Catholic church and was victorious there. After Jon died the family at Oddi was still the most powerful family in the country but they soon began to go downhill and after Pall, Jon Loftsson's son, died in 1211, the family lost it's grips in Icelandic politics.
