Messenger: King Attila really wants you, Gunnar, and your brother Hogni to pay him a visit to the Hun kingdom. He will give you plenty of money and miles of land if you will come.
Gunnar: Brother Hogni, what do you think we should do? I didn't know anybody had more gold than we do. We have the sharpest swords, the most decorative bows and I have the most beautiful horse in the world. We simply have all things much better than the Huns.
Hogni: Yeah! What do you think our sister Gudrun meant by sending us a ring wrapped in wolf's hair? I believe she was warning us of some danger.
Storyteller: Gunnar's friends and family warned him of going but he didn't listen!
Gunnar: Hey, drink-controller! Try to do something that makes sense!
Storyteller: The local people said goodbye to the brothers with tears in their eyes. They rode over hills and mountains and finally they arrived at Attila's palace. The brothers thought the palace looked great and inside Attila sat drinking. But outside it was crowded with armed soldiers.
Hogni: Hey, cool palace! ... Look, there's our sister Gudrun, let's have a chat with her. Hey, Gunnar, she's a kind of sober, that's something new!
Gudrun: Gunnar, get out of here at once! You have been fooled! How the hell are you going to get out of this mess? It would have been wise of you, brother Gunnar, to put on your armour and bring your soldiers to attack Attila, but now the opposite will happen: Instead of Attila you and Hogni will become snake-food.
Gunnar: Now it's too late, sister, to gather soldiers, because they are far away.
(Gunnar is arrested bu Hogni manages to kill eight of Attila's men before he is arrested too. Then Gunnar is asked if he wants to buy his life with gold.)
Gunnar: I want my brother's heart!
(Attila's soldiers cut the heart from some slave and bring it to Gunnar.)
Gunnar: This is not my brother's heart, this is the heart of some slave, it's soft and shivering!
(When Attila's men cut out Hogni's heart he laughes to show how brave he is. Then they bring it to Gunnar.)
Gunnar: Now, this is my brother's heart, it's strong and hard and doesn't quiver, unlike the soft slave's heart. It's good to know that Hogni is dead because now I'm the only one who knows where the Niflungar-treasure is hidden. The gold is better off in the river Rhine than in the poor hands of the Huns.
Attila: Push the wagon off - now Gunnar is thrallbound!
(The great Attila rode his horse Glaumur and wore all his great weapons. But Gudrun cried salty tears because of the loss of his brothers.)
Gudrun: You betrayed my brother Gunnar. I hope some day you'll also be badly betrayed!
Storyteller: Then Gunnar was taken by the crowd and thrown down into a hole full of snakes. He sat down, furious, and started to play his harp. But eventually the snakes killed him. Attila rode home, where Gudrun showed him in.
Gudrun: Come here, my dear Attila, and have som selected fresh meat.
Attila: Uhm, upon my plate comes something soft and juicy!
Storyteller: Then fully bearded men rushed in and proposed a toast with Attila but Gudrun served the beer. When Attila was fullfed Gudrun told him an ugly story.
Gudrun: Didn't the food taste as good as I said it would? Now I will tell you what it was. You just ate our sons' honeyfried hearts! Yes, you heard correctly!! You will never again watch them play or hold them in your arms!! HA HA !!
Storyteller: Everybody at the party started to cry except Gudrun.
Still she was not heartless. Well, Attila drowned his sorrows in beer and
he was so drunk that he couldn't fight back when Gudrun killed him and
set his palace on fire and everybody burned inside, except the dogs. That's
how she revenged her brothers. No other woman has done anything like what
she did, not now and not then. In her lifetime she caused the death of
three kings. May others do better!
