The Adventure of Thrymur, Thor and Mjolnir
This picture of Thor's hammer was drawn by Olafia
It was one sunny morning that Thor
the Tundergod woke up and saw to his resentment that his hammer Mjolnir
had disappeared. He shook his hair and beard and screamed at Loki:
Loki, someone has stolen my hammer!" They went to Freyja,
because she owned some feathers of a bird that they could dress in to fly
to look for the hammer. Freyja lent them the feathers and Loki flew to
Jotunheimar (the Land of the Giants) because the hammer would probably
be there.
When he came to Jotunheimar he met Thrymur
the King of Giants that sat there on a hill. Thrymur was surprised t see
Loki and asked him what he was doing in his land. "I'm looking for Thor's
hammer," answered Loki, "did you steal it?"
"Oh, yes, I did steal it and I buried it deep in the ground where you
will never find it" Thrymur said and laughed monsterously. "You won't get
it back unless Freyja comes to Jotunheimar to marry me, ha, ha, ha!"
So Loki flew back and told Thor the news. They went back to visit Freyja.
When they saw her Loki said: "Thrymur, the Giant, has Mjolnir and he will
not return it unless you marry him, so put on your wedding dress and come
with me to Jotunheimar."
Freyja then became so angry that Asgardur trembled. She didn't
want to marry a big, ugly giant.
Now they had a problem so all the heathen gods and godesses met to
find a solution. They had been thinking for a long time when suddenly Heimdallur
had a great idea. "We'll just put Thor in a wedding dress and have him
wear Freyja's necklace. Thrymur will never know the difference!"
Thor was not too happy about the idea because he was afraid that everyone
would tease him. But he accepted in the end because it was the only way
he could get Mjolnir back. So Thor put on his dress and Loki disguised
himself as Freyja's slave. That is how they went to Jotunheimar.
In Jotunheimar Thrymur was happily preparing a huge celebration. He
became even happier when Thor and Loki showed up in their disguises. In
the evening there was a feast and because Thor was so big he drank 3 barrels
of ale and he ate 8 salmons and one bull. Thrymur became very surprised
so he asked, "How can Freyja eat so much?" Loki answered him quickly: "Freyja
has not eaten for 8 days because she has been so anticipated by the wedding."
Now, Thrymur wanted to kiss Freyja. But when he saw her eyes he jumped
away from her, He had been so scared to see the mean look in her eyes.
Loki quickly explained to Thrymur that Freyja hadn't slept for 8 days because
she had been looking forward to seeing him.
Thrymur believed Loki and announced that he and Freyja would marry
at once so that she would not have to wait any longer. He then layed Mjolnir
in Freyja's lap as had been agreed.
That made Thor happy and it didn't take him a long time to get a firm
grip on Mjolnir's handle. Thor then beat Thrymur up and also Thrymur's
family. Thor could now go back to Asgardur with Mjolnir.
