Thorolfur Kveld-Ulfsson

Thorolfur was a son of Kveld-Ulfur and Salbjoerg. He had one brother who was named Grimur but his nickname was Skalla-Grimur. The brothers were not at all alike. Skalla-Grimur was like his father who was a berserk but Thorolfur looked like his mother. He was very handsome and glamorous, very popular, liked to have fun and was a very energetic man. When he was very young he began going on viking voyages with his people and those voyages were very successful.

Haraldur harfagri (= fair-haired) was trying to conquire Norway and wanted Kveld-Ulfur and his sons to join him but Kveld-Ulfur didn't want to because he felt that something bad would happen to them. Haraldur became king of Norway and Thorolfur became his courtier because he thought that it was a very respectful position. Then he met Bardur and they became good friends. After a great battle Bardur was wounded and going to die. He asked the king for permission to dispose of his properties himself. Bardur bequathed Thorolfur his properties, including his wife, Sigridur.

Thorolfur moved to Torgar (Bardur's farm) with Sigridur and became a tax-collector for the king. A little later Sigridur's father dies and bequeaths his son-in-law his farm, Sandnes. Thorolfur has now become very rich and respected in his county. <

Now the story tells about the sons of Hildiridur who had partly the right of an inheritance after their father, Bjoergolfur, who was Bardur's grandfather. Neither Brynjolfur, son of Bjoergolfur, nor Bardur, son of Brynjolfur, had given them their part of the inheritance. Now Thorolfur has settled down at Torgar but the sons of Hildiridur weren't pleased with that. The sons of Hildiridur spread some lies about Thorolfur to the king, including that Thorolfur was going to throw the king off the throne. At first the king didn't believe this but he changed his mind later because Thorolfur's behaviour indicated that he was planning on gaining power in Norway. The king offered Thorolfur to be his standard bearer to avoid that he took the power but Thorolfur didn't have the time because he had to take care of both his farms.

The king asked the sons of Hildiridur to collect his taxes in Finnmoerk and gave them the farm Torgar to live on and then Thorolfur moves to Sandnes. In spite of this Thorolfur is still a great man. The sons of Hildiridur could only collect a small part of what Thorolfur used to collect and they told the king that Thorolfur had already gone and robbed everything in Finnmoerk before they could collect the taxes and said that he could see it himself because now Thorolfur's ship was coming from England after Thorolfur had let his men spend all the king's money there. The king makes arrangements that Thorolfur's ship gets robbed. Later when Thorolfur is on a viking voyage he sees the king's ship and robs it to get revenge.

The king goes to Thorolfur's farm, surrounds it and asks him to give up but Thorolfur doesn't want to. He prefers fighting and so they do. The king gives him the death blow and then Thorolfur says: "Now I walked three feet too short" (thus meaning that he missed the king) and then he fells dead on his face in front of the king's feet.
