Another picture of Skalla-Grimur
Skalla-Grimur was an ugly darkish man but he was a great berserk and a poet. His real name was Grimur but when he was about 25 years old he had become quite bold and therefore he got his nickname. ("Skalli" means bold head.) Most of us recognize him by the name Skalla-Grimur. Skalla-Grimur was prescient and could foresee events.
Skalla-Grimur lived in Norway until he was about 30 years old but then he fled to Iceland with his father. They fled from Norway because they had killed the king's men to get revenge for Thorolfur's death. Skalla-Grimur and his wife, Bera Yngvarsdottir, who he married in Norway, settled down at Borg a Myrar in 891. There Kveld-Ulfur's coffin drifted ashore. Kveld-Ulfur had died on the way to Iceland and his coffin was thrown over-board. Before he died he ordered that Skalla-Grimur should settle down where his coffin would drift ashore.
They had two sons, Thorolfur (born 900) and Egill (born 910) but in between they had two daughters, Saeunn and Thorunn.
Skalla-Grimur was an energetic man and established a big farm at Borg and he had a lot of men there all the time. He was a great blacksmith and a ship-builder and he ordered his workers to row to the islands and collect eggs, kill seals, whales etc.
