When Loki, Odinn
and Hainir decided to explore the world they came to a waterfall where
Loki killed an otter that was lying and eating half asleep. When they came
to a farm where a man called Hreidmar lived, Loki started to brag about
the hunt and then he realized that the otter had been Hreidmar's son. Hreidmar
demanded that they covered the otter's belly with red gold, to pay him
for his son's life. Loki got the gold from a dwarf, called Andvari. The
dwarf put a spell on a special ring that then landed in the hands of Hreidmar.
Hreidmar refused to share the gold with his sons, Fafnir and Reginn, and
therefore they killed their father. The dwarf's spell was already working!
Fafnir took all the gold and went up to Gnitaheidi and transformed himself
into a worm and lay down on the gold. Reginn got Sigurdur, his fosterson,
to kill Fafnir and then Sigurdur knew that Reginn was going to kill him
also. So Sigurdur killed Fafnir first and got all the gold.
Sigurdur got Gudrun Gjukadottir and became
the bloodbrother of her brothers, Gunnar and Hogni.
Gunnar wanted to have Brynhildur, the sister of Attila
king of Huns, for his wife but to have her he would have to ride the
"vafurlogi" (a magical fire surrounding her castle) which he wasn't
capable of. Then Sigurdur , killer of Fafnir, disguised himself as Gunnar
and rode the flame for him and gave Brynhildur the golden ring of Andvari.
Later she found out, from Gudrun, about the betrayal of Gunnar and Sigurdur.
Brynhildur dared Gunnar and Hogni to kill Sigurdur but they couldn't because
they were bloodbrothers. So they got their brother Got-thormur to kill
him. Then Brynhildur committed suicide after she found out that she was
in love with Sigurdur. Gunnar and Hogni got all the gold and Attila, king
of Huns, married Gudrun.
