The Lay of Iceland
Iceland is a very young land, the oldest stratum over the sea level is about 15 millj. years old which is geologically considered  as youthful. Iceland is created  by many eruptions that made many little islands but later they got so many that they consolidated a little bit every century. About 70.000 years ago the land had grown together and was now an island.  The island is still synthesizing.

There are very strong gales around Iceland. Sometimes the weather changes frequently during one day. By the coast strong wind blows from various directions  that makes it very hard to get onshore without having good ships. Because of that Iceland was inhibited rather late or not before the sailing-technique got sufficiently developed in the 9th century.
