Asgerdur

Asgerdur was born the same year as Egill Skalla-Grimsson, i.e. 910. She grew up at Borg a Myrar with Egill and Thorolfur.

When she was grown up she was very pretty, clever and well educated.

When Asgerdur was five years old her parents, Bjoern Brynjolfsson and Thora Hroaldsdottir moved to Norway but left Asgerdur with Skalla-Grimur and Bera. She lived at Borg until she was 17 years old. Then she went to Norway with Thorolfur and Egill, to meet her parents. Eight years later she married Thorolfur. They were married for only two years, then Thorolfur was killed in a battle in England. Egill then asked Asgerdur to marry him and they got married and moved to Iceland. Both of them had then stayed 12 years abroad.

Asgerdur's parents - Bjoern and Thora

Once upon a time Bjoern Brynjolfsson was in a party and saw a beautiful woman. He immediately fell in love with her and asked her brother to marry her to him. Her brother, Thorir, said no. Then Bjoern decided to steal her and bring her to his house. Bjoern's father got very angry when Bjoern appeared with Thora at their house and he guarded Thora night and day - said to Bjoern that he was to regard her as his sister! Bjoern stole Thora again and took her on his ship to the Shetland Isles. There they got married, without permission from Thora's relatives. Thora's brother complained for this to the king and the king of Norway announced that Bjoern was an outlaw.

Bjoern and Thora sailed to Iceland. They stayed with Skalla-Grimur at Borg and had a daughter, Asgerdur, in 910.

A few years later Thorolfur Skalla-Grimsson went with Bjoern and Thora to Norway and they reached an agreement with Thora's brother. The agreement was that Bjoern and Thora's marriage was legal. But it was not certain if Asgerdur had the right to inherit her parents or not since at the time she was born her parents' marriage wasn't legal.
