Freyr

Freyr is the son of Njordur and Freyja's brother. He is god of fertility and also god of love. His name means 'master', 'lord', 'the supreme' and is related to an old slavonic word meaning 'the first'.

Freyr is one of the best Aesir group. Snorri describes him as handsome, powerful and kind. He controls the rain and the sunshine and thus the fertility of the earth. One can also pray to Freyr for a good future, piece and prosperity.

Freyr was a very popular pagan god in Sweden and the Swedish kings even counted Freyr as one of their ancestors. In Iceland Freyr came next to Thor in popularity. In Sweden a lot of places bear Freyr's name but in Iceland you can only find two, i.e. Freysnes and Freysholar. In Reykjavik there's a street called Alfheimar, which was the name of Freyr's dwellings.

In Alfheimar he lived with his wife, Gerdur Gymisdottir. He saw her first when he once sat down on Odinn's throne, Hlidskjalf. As he sat there he looked north, saw Gerdur and fell so much in love with her that he couldn't speak or eat or sleep. Freyr's best man, Skirnir, went to Joetunheimar where Gerdur lived and brought her to Freyr. Instead of this deed Skirnir got Freyr's sword which was such a good sword that it fought by itself.

Now Freyr has no sword and because of that he will die at Ragnarok, when the world comes to an end.
