With the gold from Andvari, they were able to fill and cover the otterbelly and thereby they were free!
Now the story turns to Hreidmar and his two sons, Fafnir and Reginn. The brothers wanted their part of the gold but Hreidmar refused. Then they killed him but started to argue over the gold themselves. Reginn wanted to split the gold but Fafnir took it all and went to Gnitaheidi, changed into a worm and lay on the gold.
A few years later Reginn came with his fosterson, Sigurdur, and made him kill Fafnir with the sword Gramur which he had made himself. But Sigurdur also killed Reginn and then left on his great horse Grani, with all the gold.
Sigurdur goes to king Gjuki and his wife Grimhildur. He marries their daughter Gudrun and becomes the bloodbrother of her brothers, Gunnar and Hogni.
Gunnar wanted to propose to Brynhildur Budladottir, sister of king Attila. But she was dwelling on Hindarfjall, (at the top of a mountain) in a castle surrounded with magic fire and she only wanted to marry the one who dared ride throught the fire. Gunnar's horse didn't want to go through but they found a solution; Gunnar and Sigurdur changed looks and Sigurdur, looking like Gunnar, went through on his great horse Grani. They did this because the great horse Grani would only ride with Sigurdur on his back.
Sigurdur then slept with Brynhildur but kept a sword between then. In the morning he gave her Andvaranautur (the Ring of Andvari) and rode out ahead of Brynhildur to switch looks again with Gunnar.
Once when Brynhildur and Gudrun were washing their hair in a river, Brynhildur said that she didn't want to wash her hair in the water that ran from Gudrun's hair, because Brynhildur's husband, Gunnar, was a greater hero than Sigurdur. Gudrun got mad and told Brynhildur how Gunnar and Sigurdur had switched their looks - that actually it was Sigurdur who rode through the magic fire although he looked like Gunnar. Brynhildur got very angry and wanted to have Gunnar and Hogni kill Sigurdur but they made their brother Got-thormur kill him. Then Sigurdur and Got-thormur killed each other. Brynhildur killed herself and Gunnar and Hogni got the gold and the ring Andvaranautur as well.
King Attila (Atli Budlason) married Gudrun and invited Gunnar and Hogni
to visit them. But before they got to Attila's
palace they hid the gold in the river Rhine and it hasn't been found
since then.
