The Saga of Greenland
A viking named Herjólfur moved to Greenland with Eric the Red. His son, Bjarni, came from Norway to Iceland and decided to follow his father to Greenland, but got lost. He saw N-America or Canada, but he didn´t go on shore. He made his way to Greenland and settled down there. He met Leifur and Eric the Red, Leifur's  father. Leifur bought  the ship from Bjarni and intended to find the land that Bjarni saw. Leifur then discovered Markland, Helluland and Vínland (N-America). Leifur and his crew built a camp in Vínland and stay there one winter. Later in the springtime when Leifur left  from Vínland, he came upon 15 shipwrecked  people and saved them. For this rescue and the discovery of the new land  he was  called Leifur the Lucky. [The picture is made by Karín Rut.]

When Leifur turned  back home his brother Þorvaldur decided to  go to Vínland too. He stayeds in the camp of Leifur and explored the country. Þorvaldur killed 8 Indians, they revenged and Þorvaldur got an arrow in his chest and died. His men took care of a  Christian burial seromony and then went back to Greenland.

Þorsteinn, son of Eric the Red, married Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir, the woman that Leifur rescued from the shipwreck. Þorsteinn and Guðríður intended to go to Vínland but caught a terrible storm and landed their ship in Vestribyggð on Greenland. There they got accommodation with Þorsteinn svarti. Some disease broke out and Þorsteinn Eiríksson died.

A man whose name was  Þorfinnur karlsefni came to Greenland and stayed  with Leifur in Brattahlíð. He  married Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir, who was a widow since Þorsteinn died. They went  to Vínland and had a son that they called Snorri. Snorri was born the first winter they stayed in Vínland and is thus the first white person to be born in Northern America.  Their relationship with the Indians was fine in the beginning but later they got into fights with one another. Þorfinnur did not like the persection he felt that they suffered from the Indians and they moved back to Greenland. [Sævar Birgir drew the picture.]

Two brothers from Iceland, Helgi and Finnbogi,  came  to Greenland. Freydís, daughter of  Eric the Red,  went with the brothers to Vínland. In Vínland there came  up some disagreement between  the two groups of settlers  and Freydís lied to her  husband that Helgi and Finnbogi had mistreated  her.  Then Freydís's husband and his men attacked the group of Helgi and Finnbogi.  Freydís's  men killed Helgi and Finnbogi and all the men in their group. Freydís herself killed five women. They then went  back to Greenland. When Leifur found out  what had happened he got very angry. But he couldn't do anything because Freydís, the murderess, was his sister.

Þorfinnur karlsefni and Guðríður moved back to Iceland and lived in Skagafjörður. When Þorfinnur died Guðríður went  to Rome for absolution from the pope, then returned to Iceland and became  a nun for the last years of her life. No woman in the 11th century travelled so far in her lifetime as Guðríður.
